Help with downloading via an FTP server

Welcome to the ftp server tutorial for #Gamealbums @ irc.blessed.net

Download the latest version of Bulletproof FTP Server at http://www.bpftpserver.com. Install it and launch the program.

Go to [Set up > Main > General]. Enter the name of your server, and set the port number (default: 21). Other options you can set are "Activate FTP server on startup" and “Put into system tray on startup”.

Now, go to [Set up > Main > Options]. Fill out all the options as shown in the picture.

Go to [Set up > Main > Advanced]. Fill out all fields as shown in the picture.

If you are behind a Firewall/Router or if you have a dynamic IP (skip to Step 5 if this does not apply to you)

Dynamic IP:

You have two options:
You can go to http://www.dyndns.org and register to get a DNS Forwarder, which is a permanent address that connects to your IP. You can also download a DynDNS Updater, which can be downloaded on the Support section, then go to “Download Update Clients”. That will update your IP whenever it has changed automatically, as long as you have it running. The other option is you can go to [Setup > Main > Dynamic IP] then check “Enable IP Changes”. You can also choose the amount of minutes it should wait until it checks for IP changes again. This will assure that your IP is kept consistently updated. Either way is up to you.

Firewall

If you are behind a firewall/router, you will need to forward the port. The default for FTP servers is port 21, but if that doesn’t work for you, go to http://www.portforward.com and check which port belongs to you. You will need to forward the port on your router configuration page.

Go to [Setup > User Accounts].Right-click on the User Accounts section, select “Add”, and name the account, Download. Right-click on the Access Rights section, and click “Add”. Choose the directory that you would like to share, and to the right, check the following: Read, List, +Subdir, then click select. Next, look under the Setup section, and choose a login and password for your server. (if you uncheck the login, that will allow users to choose their name, which is helpful for knowing who is on your server) Make sure you check or uncheck login, and check password.

Under [Setup > User Accounts], go to the Miscellaneous section, and check the following: “Enable Account”, “Enable time-out (in seconds)”, “Max. No. of Users Limit”, “Max No. of Connects Per IP”, “Show Relative Path”, and “Hide Files/Dir With “Hidden” Attribute Set”.

Other Options To Consider Using

Ratio, Quota, Bps

Go to [Setup > User Accounts > Ratio, Quota, Bps]. You may set a speed limit for users when they are downloading from your server. The equation for this is [1024 bytes/s = 1 KB/s]. See the picture as an example.

Upload Account

The upload account will allow people upload files to your server. Go to [Setup > User Accounts]. Right-Click on the User Accounts section, and name the account, Upload. Right-Click on the Access Rights section, and choose the directory where people could upload files to you. To the right, check the following: Write, Append, Make, List, +Subdirs. In the Setup section, check both the login and password, and name them both appropriately. (ex: I name them both upload) Under the Miscellaneous section, check “Enable Account”, “Enable Time-Out (in seconds)”, “Show Relative Path”, “Hide Files/Dirs With “Hidden” Attribute Set”. Also, you can leave the speed limit in the “Ratio, Quota, Bps” section unchecked.

Look Account

The look account allows people to look around your server, but not download. Go to [Setup > User Accounts]. Right-Click on the User Accounts section, and name the account, Look. Right-Click on the Access Rights section, and choose the same directory you had for the Download account. Then, check the following: Read, List, +Subdirs. In the Setup section, check both the login and password, and name them both appropriately. (ex: I name them both look) Under the Miscellaneous section, check “Enable Account”, “Enable Time-Out (in seconds)”, “Show Relative Path”, “Hide Files/Dirs With “Hidden” Attribute Set”. Also, you can leave the speed limit in the “Ratio, Quota, Bps” section unchecked.
